The Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) is finalising plans for the installation of a new renewable energy training facility at its Epping campus, home to NMIT's popular Certificate IV in Renewable Energy course. The scale and layout of the new facility will make it one of Australia's foremost renewable energy training centres.
The new facility will include up to 2 kW installed photovoltaic capacity along with a 5.6 kW Eoltec Scirocco wind turbine. The energy sources will be connected to two classrooms, one set up for training ELV (Extra Low Voltage) installers and one for LV (Low Voltage) grid-connect installers. Power from the PV arrays and wind turbine will be switched between four workstations in either the ELV or LV training room.
Each workstation in the ELV room will include all components associated with standalone power systems, including regulators, inverters and a battery bank. The LV workstations will include all components associated with grid-connect systems, including grid-connect inverters.
Recent months have seen strong growth in enrolment enquiries for NMIT's Certificate IV in Renewable Energy course, so the new facility seems set to play an important role in training a new generation of renewable energy technicians.
